Most Recent Releases

Current X.Org Foundation release

X.Org has released [:X11R682Release:X11R6.8.2] in the [:X11R68Release:X11R6.8.x] branch of Xorg. [:X11R682Release:Click here] for more information about this release.

Next X.Org Foundation release

The next major release of Xorg will be the 6.9/7.0 release. 6.9 and 7.0 will contain identical source code, but 7.0 will feature a modular, autotooled build system. This should minimize the impact of the transition. For further details, please read the ModularizationProposal and see the [:X11R6970ReleasePlan:release plan]. For a partial list of changes since 6.8, please read ChangesSince68.

Future X.Org Foundation releases

The next major release after the 6.9/7.0 release is X11R7.1. For a list of proposed changes, please read ChangesForX11R71. In addition, at least one more minor maintenance release of the 6.8.X series is also planned.

Development snapshots

Snapshots of the CVS tree are now being generated every week. These reflect the current state of development, and may be less stable than the official releases. You can get them from [http://xorg.freedesktop.org/snapshots/ here].

Reporting problems, asking questions and getting help

Development

If you are interested in helping in our efforts to improve the X Window System technology, please have a look at our DevelopersPages. Please remember that X is just one component of the overall free desktop and that therefore future X enhancements should be thought through with this perspective.

Modular Development Efforts

The modular repackaging efforts can be found in the following projects on freedesktop.org:

XInput Hotplug Extensions

We are working on a new revision of the XInput extension that will allow the server to pick up new input devices as they are added. The work is being tracked on the ["XInputHotplug"] page.

Developers wishing to build modular Xorg should visit [:ModularDevelopersGuide:The Modular Developers Guide]

Fixing bugs

Bugs assigned to the pseudo-user xorg-team@lists.x.org need someone to take ownership of them. If you feel qualified to fix the bug, feel free to take ownership of the bug by reassigning it to yourself.

To Do

See the ToDo page for a list of tasks that need to be done specific to Xorg. A more comprehensive list [http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/FreedesktopProjects of unfinished X related projects] (not necessarily involving working on the server package itself) is also available.

Mailing Lists

On [:XorgMailingLists:this page] you can find a list of X-related mailing lists hosted on lists.freedesktop.org. More mailing lists on X Window System and related technologies along with subscription directions are available at [http://www.x.org/XOrg_Foundation_Join_OpenLists.html XOrg Foundation].

Mirrors

If you would like to mirror the X11R6.8 release or the freedesktop site, please send mail to release-wranglers@lists.freedesktop.org or sitewranglers@lists.freedesktop.org.
